Home win for St Neots as visiting clubs put in strong showings at St Neots small boats head 2014
Over a dozen of the region’s rowing clubs put in a strong showing with their rowers scoring wins in different classes which ranged from singles to coxed quads, as St Neots Rowing Club hosted the St Neots small boats head rowing competition, on October 5th 2014, on the river Great Ouse at St Neots, Cambridgeshire.
The head event which follows a time trial format, saw teams ranging from 13 year old juniors to seasoned masters, competing over a 2.6 kilometre course between Eaton Socon and Little Paxton, passing under the Town Bridge and in front of hundreds of spectators who were enjoying the October sunshine and the hospitality of St Neots Rowing Club.
Top team of the day was St Neots Rowing Club who scored 8 wins, with Bedford modern running them a close second with 6 wins, pursued closely by Newark Rowing club who’s rowers topped the podium four times.
St Neots’ winners included Zoe Adamson (women’s junior 16 single and women’s junior 18 double), Louise Shorten (women’s junior 17 single and women’s junior 18 double), Josh Davies (men’s junior 18 single and men’s junior 18 double with Fergus Mitchell). Success also came for St Neots in the intermediate (IM3) coxed four, the women’s novice coxed four and the women’s intermediate (IM3) pair.
Talking about how the club’s rowers had performed, St Neots’ Junior squad Head Coach Helen Knowles said, “These are promising results for so early in the season, with some excellent individual results.”
Captain of St Neots Rowing Club, Ali Young added, “It was great to see so many competitors from other clubs coming along to the small boats head this year, we had people of all ages taking part and on behalf of the club I’d like to say a big thank you to all the helpers who made it such a great event for the competitors.”
Clubs taking part who’s rowers also achieved wins in the St Neots Small Boats Head, included, Peterborough, Star Club Bedford, Bedford Girls School, Nuneaton, Kings School Ely, St Ives Rowing Club and Leicester Rowing Club.
